Defendant Convicted of Armed Robbery

Santa Rosa, CA  –  April 19, 2016  –  District Attorney Jill Ravitch has announced that defendant Johnny Tasker Douglas, 35 years-old of Oakland, CA, was found guilty by a jury on two counts of robbery and two counts of assault with a firearm.

The charges resulted from the July 10, 2014 robbery of the Bennett Valley Jewelers.  The defendant and a second robber walked into the store armed with a firearm, and proceeded to smash the display cases and grab several Rolex watches.  The robbery was interrupted when the store owner confronted the two robbers with his own firearm.  The owner was able to disarm the robbers and prevent one of them from escaping beyond the parking lot.  Douglas, who did get away, remained at large for several weeks before being arrested.

The jury concluded Douglas was guilty of robbery and assault with a firearm of the store owner and his employee, both of whom were in the store at the time.

The case returns to court Wednesday, April 20, 2016 for a determination by the trial judge on whether the additional allegation the defendant has twice already been to prison is true.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Mark Urioste, assisted by District Attorney Investigator Denise UrtonTim Hughes of the Santa Rosa Police Department headed the investigation.
