Santa Rosa, CA – January 6, 2017 – District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced that Cipriano Perez Velasquez, 45, of Rohnert Park, was sentenced to 13 years plus 7 years to life in state prison today for shooting his wife in November of 2015. The defendant was sentenced on by Judge Patrick Broderick.
District Attorney Ravitch stated, “The defendant has a history of domestic violence, and on this occasion almost ended the victim’s life. He has forfeited his freedom by his actions, and deserves the sentence he received. Hopefully now the victim will no longer live in fear.”
Perez pled no contest to attempted first degree murder, personal use of a firearm, making criminal threats and causing great bodily injury to the victim. In a separate case involving theft of equipment from a Burbank Housing construction site, the defendant pled to a charge of grand theft.
The shooting occurred on the evening of November 20, 2015. The defendant and the victim were estranged and the victim was planning to divorce the defendant. That evening, after numerous unsuccessful attempts to reach the victim by phone and text, he
went to her house and confronted her as she was getting home from work. The victim drove away from the defendant, who then followed her down the street on foot. When the victim stopped her vehicle, the Defendant ran up to the car and shot the victim through the driver’s side window. The victim was struck in the
left side of her chest but managed to drive home, where her daughter called 911. The couple had a history of domestic violence.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Barbara Nanney who was assisted by District Attorney Investigator David Lundgren. Rohnert Park Detective Deborah Lamaison and other officers investigated the case for Rohnert Park Public Safety.
