Penngrove Homicide Defendant Sentenced to Life in Prison

Santa Rosa, CA  –  December 7, 2017  –  Defendant Victor Silva, 29 years old from Marin County, was sentenced today by the Honorable Dana Simmonds to 41 years to life in prison after having entered no contest pleas to charges of first degree murder and robbery in September of this year. Silva was convicted of murdering Olga Dinelli, an 84 year old life-long resident of Penngrove, during the course of a 2015 residential robbery. Silva’s accomplice in the murder and robbery, Stephanie Hill, was shot and killed by law enforcement as the two fled from California across the Arizona border.

The California prosecution was delayed while Silva was tried and convicted in Arizona for Hill’s death under the “provocative act” doctrine. Silva was sentenced in Arizona to a minimum of 25 years in prison before he was ultimately transported back to California to face charges for Dinelli’s murder.

District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This defendant participated in a brutal and senseless crime that had a deep impact in this community. His victim was a life-long resident of rural Sonoma County. She was a caring and giving person, and was taken away from her family and friends suddenly and violently. There is no sentence that will replace this loss. However, we hope that this significant sentence will bring some closure to the Dinelli family.”

An investigation by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department revealed that in February of 2015 Silva and Hill fled Marin County law enforcement after being found with stolen firearms during a traffic stop. The two were able to get away and hid-out on the Dinelli’s farm before eventually confronting Olga Dinelli in front of her home at gunpoint while wearing masks and gloves. Silva and Hill tied her to a chair, and ransacked the home. As Silva loaded the last of the stolen property into a vehicle they stole from the home, Hill shot and killed Dinelli. Although they fled again, law enforcement was able to locate them via cell phone GPS near the Arizona border. When law enforcement attempted to apprehend them, they led dozens of officers and deputies on a 100 mile pursuit, all while shooting at passing motorists. Law enforcement disabled their vehicle with spike strips, and the defendant’s fled into the desert. Silva was taken into custody, and Hill was shot and killed after aiming a handgun at deputies.

The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Staebell and Deputy District Attorney Amy Ariyoshi and investigated by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department VCI Detective Gary Freitas.
