Armed Robber Sentenced To 159 Years To Life In Prison

Santa Rosa, CA  –  September 5, 2017  –  Defendant Jimmy Lee Terry, Jr., 45 years old of Oakland, was sentenced earlier today by the Honorable Dana Simmonds to a term of 159 years to life to be served at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.  Earlier this year Terry was found guilty by a jury of kidnapping to commit robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a firearm, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.  The jury also found that he discharged a firearm during the commission of his crimes.

District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This was a brazen and planned attack in a very public location in the middle of the day.  Clearly, this defendant was willing to take significant risks to accomplish his criminal acts, and it is by sheer luck no one was injured further.  The severity of the sentence is appropriate given the heinous crimes that were committed.”

The charges resulted from the July 10, 2014 robbery of the Bennett Valley Jewelers in the city of Santa Rosa.  Terry and his partner walked into the store armed with a firearm and robbed the store of several Rolex watches.  The robbery was interrupted when the store owner confronted the two robbers with his own firearm.  Though Terry took the store clerk hostage, and used her as a shield while shooting at the store owner, the owner was able to disarm the robbers and prevent Terry from escaping.

Terry had four prior convictions for robbery, and had been on parole for only 12 days when he committed the Santa Rosa robbery.  At sentencing, the judge suggested that Terry was the type of recidivist offender contemplated by the Three-Strikes law, and sentenced him to the maximum possible term.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Mark Urioste, assisted by District Attorney Investigators Kris Allen and Denise Urton. Tim Hughes of the Santa Rosa Police Department headed the investigation.
