Does the County Counsel provide legal services to the public?

Letter A Answer

The County Counsel and attorneys of the office cannot provide legal advice to members of the public. The role of the County Counsel is to provide legal advice to the Board of Supervisors, special districts and other elected officials for matters related to the operation and management of the County and those districts.

If you need a lawyer and do not have one you can call the Lawyer Referral Service operated by the Sonoma County Bar Association at (707) 546-5297 extension 12 or online at: http://www.sonomacountybar.org.

How do I serve a lawsuit on the County of Sonoma?

Letter A Answer

Service of a lawsuit must be made on the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors located at 575 Administration Drive, Room 100A, and Santa Rosa, California 95403.

The County is suing me for money it says I owe. Who can I talk to about this?

Letter A Answer

Lawsuits are filed by the County Counsel but you should first call Central Collections at (707) 565-2817 or online at http://www.sonoma-county.org/tax/about_centcoll.htm. The personnel there have the appropriate records and will be able to help you.

I want to look at some County records. How can I get copies?

The County Counsel is not the official custodian of the records of the County of Sonoma. You should inquire directly at the office or location where you believe the records are maintained. For a list of County departments, please see http://sonomacounty.ca.gov/Services/Services-for-Residents/.

I have received a notice to report for jury duty, but cannot attend. How can I reschedule my jury duty obligation?

Jury duty matters are handled only by the Sonoma County Superior Court.  All inquiries should be made directly to the Jury Services Division at (707) 521-6640 or online at http://sonoma.courts.ca.gov/online-services/jury-reporting.

How can I get a copy of a birth, death, or marriage certificate?

Records of births, deaths, or marriages are maintained by the County Clerk's office located at 585 Fiscal Dr. Rm 103, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. For specific information please visit the County Clerk's Office or online at http://www.sonoma-county.org/clerk/

How can I dispute or pay a traffic or parking ticket?

Questions regarding traffic violations can only be answered by the Sonoma County Superior Court-Traffic Division. All inquiries should be made directly to the Traffic Division located at 600 Administration Drive, Room 109J, Santa Rosa, CA 95403; by telephone at (707) 521-6680 or online at http://sonoma.courts.ca.gov/divisions/traffic.

Can the County Counsel's Office help me change my court appearance time/date?

No. You need to contact the Sonoma County Superior Court located at 600 Administration Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95403 or by phone at (707) 521-6500 during the hours of 8-12 p.m. If you are represented by the Public Defender's Office you can also contact them at (707) 565-2791.
