Sonoma County Junior Commission on the Status of Women to Host "Body Positivity Day" Festival

A Safe and Supportive Environment to Discuss Self-Image and Body Positivity

Santa Rosa, CA  –  April 6, 2018  –  The Sonoma County Junior Commission on the Status of Women will host “Body Positivity Day” on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the Santa Rosa High School at 1235 Mendocino Avenue. This free community event will take place on the DeSoto Field from 11.00AM to 2.00PM.

What is Body Positivity?

Body positivity is unlearning the idea that only certain bodies are worth acceptance and praise, and instead recognizing that all bodies are equally valuable. It’s deciding what feels good and healthy for you personally, and letting others do so for themselves. It’s understanding that you deserve to live in your body – without the prejudice of others, body shaming, and/or biases that withhold equal opportunities.

To celebrate our diversity and healthy selves, members of the Junior Commission on the Status of Women are hosting a festival “To Provide a Safe and Supportive Environment to discuss Self-Image and promote Body Positivity”.

The festival will feature a panel of speakers – to include a fat studies professor, a marriage and family therapist, a nutritionist, and an eating disorder survivor. There will be a Q & A to follow, art projects, music and yoga! Healthy snacks will be provided! Local non-profits and school clubs such as the Santa Rosa High School Veggie Club, Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), and the SOS Community Counseling and Teen Clinic will be on hand to share resources.

All are welcome, especially middle and high school students!

The Junior Commissioner Project is a youth mentorship program that focuses on issues of women’s equality and the need for women and girls to foster skills for independence and success in a changing global community. Each year, high school students ages 14-18 create community service projects around issues that affect women and girls, and while doing do, learn the importance of developing a voice with which to advocate.
