  7. Openings and Appointments – Blalock
    The Chair announced that 4th District Commissioner Michelle Denham had submitted her resignation, citing personal reasons, effective immediately. It had been Denham’s intentions to make this announcement herself, but was unexpectedly unable to attend the meeting.

  9. Regular Calendar Items
    Discussion and possible action on items 7 through 11.
    • American Association of California Commissions on Women (ACCW) Conference in March/April 2018 – Almond – 15 Minutes
      • Update on ACCW Executive Board decision – Decision was made to allow the Commission to host the annual event.
      • Dates/Logistics – Event dates have been moved up to Friday, March 23, 2018 for the evening reception, possibly at the Petaluma Historical Museum, and Saturday, March 24, 2018 for the day-long conference at Hotel Petaluma.
      • Budget Requested:
        • $500 Meeting space at Hotel Petaluma
        • $100 Rental of folding chairs for reception
        • $200 Food for reception
        • $200 Rental of Petaluma Museum for reception – if meeting hosted outside of March

      • Ad hoc to provide outline of previously-approved work plan that is currently being revised for future consideration – 7 Minutes

      Commissioner Brown reported that the ad hoc will focus on two areas – creating a repository of current information about vacancies on County and City Boards, Commissions, Committees, and Task Forces, and providing information and/or training on how to obtain seats on such entities. Commissioner Barrera to join the ad hoc.

      • Sonoma County Human Trafficking Task Force Outreach Program – Blalock – 3 Minutes

        In support of a multiple agency outreach program on Human Trafficking to include billboards and Sonoma County Transit bus-back advertising. CSW logo will be among those on billboards.

        Discussion over need to increased budget due to size of 2017-18 Junior Commission Project. When reviewing each line item of the requested budget, Commissioners Castro and Padilla indicated field trips would be discussed at December Junior Commission meeting.
        Motion to transfer $285 from Empowering Women ad hoc and $500 from the Intimate Partner Violence ad hoc to address the shortfall of the Junior Commissioner Project allocation

      • Survivor Campaign/Social Media – Officers – 7 Minutes
        Officers outlined new social media/Facebook plan with a theme of “Survivor,” and shared the expectations for each ad hoc committee’s contributions. Ad hoc members must contribute survivor stories that relate to their ad hoc. Commissioners Almond and Barrera to work together on finalizing the graphics. Commissioner Langdon to search for a graphic designer willing to donate time for future projects.

      • Legislative Affairs Report – 5 Minutes (Barrera, Diaz De Leon, Fleming)
        Commissioner Barrera reported out on letters written by the liaisons and signed by the Chair:
        • Title IX Policy Change – Letter to US Secretary of Education – in opposition to the abolishment of Obama-era guidance on addressing campus sexual assault.
        • In Support of Board of Supervisor Resolution on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
      • Administrative Report – Staff – 5 Minutes
        • Staff discussed the option of moving up December 14, 2017 meeting to an earlier time to accommodate a social/holiday gathering immediately following the meeting.
          Motion to move the December 14, 2017 meeting to 5.00pm to accommodate a 7.00pm holiday gathering.

    • Speaker Coordinator – Chair Blalock has invited Nancy Kirshner-Rodriguez, the Executive Director of the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls to speak at the December 14, 2017 meeting.
    • Volunteer Coordinator – Commissioner Denham was not present to report.

Mental Health/Suicide Ad Hoc Committee Update

The mental health ad hoc met on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. 

  • Discussed criteria used to define depression
  • Worked on bullet points for the bookmarks for depression for adults and depression for teens
  • Commissioner Barerra writing bullet points and will translate to Spanish when majority of ad hoc is in agreement to the language
  • Barrera working on emergency script for the website
  • Commissioner Badham working on bullet points for bookmarks on suicide for adults and teens. Follow-up in-person meeting planned to discuss bullet points. Badham to provide copies to ad hoc for review. Once majority of ad hoc approves language, Barrera will translate to Spanish.
  • Commissioner Almond working to connect with Petaluma Health Center to pursue collaboration on hosting a NAMI presentation in January. Target date: weeknight, mid- to late-January.
