New Gas Tax will Fund Pavement, Ditching, Culverts and More

Santa Rosa, CA  –  April 17, 2018  –  On April 17th, 2018, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved road improvement projects which will make it easier and safer to travel in Sonoma County. These improvements will be funded with the new gas tax, also known as Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. 

“The new gas tax will more than double the amount of State funding Sonoma County receives for roads, raising our total state revenue to about $23 Million when the bill is fully phased in,” stated Board of Supervisor David Rabbitt. “We are a self-help County and dedicate more local discretionary funds to roads than any County in California, but with 1,368 miles of roads these funds are necessary to bring our roads into good condition.” 

The improvements include over 15 miles of resurfaced roads, 12 miles of ditching, and the replacement of 13 culverts and two viaducts. These projects are budgeted with the $9.8 million in new gas tax funding that County of Sonoma is projected to receive in Fiscal Year 2018-19.

The new gas tax comes with transparency and accountability: transportation agencies must submit project lists like the one approved today to the State in order to receive funding. This ensures that the $5 billion each year generated from the new gas tax is dedicated wisely. 

The improvements planned with new gas taxes are in addition to work planned with local funds.
