December 24 – 30, 2015

Santa Rosa, CA  –  December 24, 2015  –  Effective Thursday, December 24, 2015, Sonoma County is issuing a “Code Blue” advisory in response to the National Weather Service’s Severe Weather Alert of extremely cold nights and rain predicted for the next week.  This advisory, which requests that all homeless service agencies able to do so, expand beds and open warming facilities as described in the Homelessness Winter Weather Response Plan adopted by the Board of Supervisors on October 13th, 2015, in an effort to proactively mitigate cold-weather impacts on Sonoma County’s homeless population.

A Code Blue advisory is issued during periods of time when low temperatures drop below 38 degrees, or when the wind chill reduces the effective temperature below 38 degrees, or when rainfall makes it difficult or impossible for unsheltered individuals to remain dry.  As overnight temperatures are predicted to be at or near freezing throughout the week, the advisory will remain in effect for the next seven nights, when the need for a continuing advisory will be assessed based on the latest weather conditions.

Volunteers are needed to help staff shifts at local shelters, warming stations, as well as to provide outreach about navigation support to the County’s homeless population. Donations of warm items (jackets, clothing, blankets, etc.) are also needed.

The latest information on open shelters, volunteering, and donations can be obtained by calling 2-1-1, or online at www.211sonoma.org and at the Catholic Charities’ Cold Weather Hotline at 855-707-4678.
