About Us

The Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District (NSCAPCD) is one of 35 California air districts established to regulate the emissions of air pollution from "stationary sources" that could be detrimental to the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The District's legal mandate originates from the federal Clean Air Act and California Health and Safety Code, and our oversight agencies are the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board. Our local rules and regulations are adopted by the District Board of Directors.

District Boundaries

The NSCAPCD is the local air pollution district for the northern and western parts of Sonoma County. If you are within Sonoma County but are not within the District area, please contact the Bay Area Air Quality Management District at (415) 771-6000 or visit their website at .

Not sure which air district you're in? Find out with our interactive map.

NSCAPCD generates its operations revenue by providing air pollution control permits to stationary sources of air pollution. These permits contain regulatory requirements as required by Federal, State and Local law for air pollution control. The District receives additional funds from DMV registration activities that have been legislatively designated for specific programs to mitigate air pollution from motor vehicles. If the District levies a monetary penalty for permit non-compliance, the revenue is applied to community projects, as approved by the BOS to address air pollution.
